Lyrics:
I have a tale to tell
Sometimes, it gets so hard to hide it well
I was not ready for the fall
Too blind to see the writing on the wall

A man can tell a thousand lies
I’ve learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell the secret I have learned
‘Til then, it will burn inside of me

I know where beauty lives
I’ve seen it once, I know the warmth she gives
The light that you could never see
It shines inside, you can’t take that from me

A man can tell a thousand lies
I’ve learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell the secret I have learned
‘Til then, it will burn inside of me

The truth is never far behind
You kept it hidden well
If I live to tell the secret I knew
Then will I ever have the chance again?

If I ran away, I’d never have the strength to go very far
How would they hear the beating of my heart?
Will it grow cold, the secret that I hide? Will I grow old?
How will they hear? When will they learn? How will they know?

A man can tell a thousand lies
I’ve learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell the secret I have learned
‘Til then, it will burn inside of me

The truth is never far behind
You kept it hidden well
If I live to tell the secret I knew
Then will I ever have the chance again?

A man can tell a thousand lies
I’ve learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell the secret I have learned
‘Til then, it will burn inside of me

  1. I grow up with this song. And had a secret I kept for 43 years. Been sexualy abused by a close family member who everyone loved a relay on. I lived with the knowledge that everyone lives around me is a lie, their happiness is a lie. From such a young age I protected them by letting them believe everything is normal.
Inside, a part of wanted to stop existing. I ended up far far away from everyone i loved and after many years of never giving up trying I got the life that I deserved, he can't take that from me.
And yes, the truth is never far behind, bubble burst when I was 43. Everyone was in shock. All those years they thought I was just crazy, i was the black sheep that no one never understood suddenly made sense to them. I felt sorry for them because I didn't want to cause them any pain. The pain was for me to hold. When they suddenly figured that they need to protect me it was too late. I learned to live with the abuse and the abuser was dead.
Secrets will suck the life out of you. If you have a secret go tell someone. It had taken me years to understand I have not done anything wrong and the wrong was on him, that it was not my responsibility to protect them but it was their responsibility to protect me. And they failed. I grow up wanting to believe that there is another world, a better world. I run as far as I can till I found a hiding place at some far away corner of the world. I had the strength to go far and they never heard the beating of my heart. The secret never grows cold but I learned to live with it. I am at peace.

  2. Should be another classic for Stranger Things ☺️ this was my tune in 1986. I was only 15 and had so many secrets and heartache. Angst was my middle name.

  3. There was a time I thought La Isla Bonita was her best song but that was in 1987…
Well it's 2022 and ever since I first heard this song in 1998, it is in my humble opinion her best song. As a matter of fact, I am listening to it as I type hence why I've found myself here. This is just pure gold.
